Dragan Markovina

Dragan Markovina was born in Mostar in 1981. He holds a doctorate in historical sciences, and is a publicist, columnist, writer, and former political activist. From 2004 to 2014, he worked at the Department of History at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, University of Split, and since then has worked and lived as a freelancer in media across the former Yugoslav cultural space. He has published about fifteen scholarly articles. He is the author of the books Između crvenog i crnog: Split i Mostar u kulturi sjećanja (Between Red and Black: Split and Mostar in the Culture of Memory), Tišina poraženog grada: eseji, priče, kolumne (The Silence of a Defeated City: Essays, Stories, Columns), Povijest poraženih (History of the Defeated), Jugoslavenstvo poslije svega (Yugoslavism After Everything), Doba kontrarevolucije (The Age of Counter-Revolution), Usamljena djeca juga (The Lonely Children of the South), Jugoslavija u Hrvatskoj (1918–2018): od euforije do tabua (Yugoslavia in Croatia (1918–2018): From Euphoria to Taboo), Libanon na Neretvi: kultura sjećanja, kultura zaborava (Lebanon on the Neretva: Culture of Memory, Culture of Forgetting), Neum, Casablanca, Povijest, politika, popularna kultura (History, Politics, Popular Culture), Partizani prohodu (Partisans on the March), 14. Februar 1945. (February 14, 1945), Maršal na Poljudu (The Marshal at Poljud), Programirani zaborav (Programmed Forgetting), Naše heroine (Our Heroines), and Žena hrabrost (Woman Courage). He received the Mirko Kovač Award for the book Između crvenog i crnog: Split i Mostar u kulturi sjećanja in 2015 and the Zdravko Grebo Award for an essay from the book Libanon na Neretvi in 2019. He contributed texts to the anthologies Stigma totalitarizma (The Stigma of Totalitarianism) and Politička upotreba prošlosti (The Political Use of the Past). He is a regular columnist for the Telegram portal, Sarajevo’s Oslobođenje, and Belgrade portals Peščanik and Velike priče, the author of the podcast U kontru sa Draganom Markovinom (Against the Current with Dragan Markovina) on O Channel, and the founder of KaP: Korčula after Party, a new incarnation of the Korčula Summer School. He lives in Split, Mostar, and on the island of Korčula.
