Nada Gašić

Nada Gašić was born in 1950 in Maribor. She has lived in Zagreb since 1952, where she obtained a degree in Yugoslav Studies and Sociology from the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences. At the Department of Slavic Studies at Charles University in Prague, she defended her doctoral dissertation on Czech-Croatian cultural relations at the beginnings of Croatian Modernism. She also worked as a lecturer at the Department of Slavic Studies at the Faculty of Philology of the State University in Saint Petersburg. She was the chief editor of the first edition of Anić’s „Dictionary of the Croatian Language“, a contributor for the „Dictionary of Foreign Words“ and „Encyclopedic Dictionary“, as well as for the Anić-Silić orthography. Using the specific features of Zagreb speech, she translated and published Hašek’s „The Good Soldier Švejk“ in 1996. For her novel „Mirna ulica drvored“ she received the „Slavić“ Award for best debut novel, while „Voda, paučina“ was awarded the highest Croatian cultural award „Vladimir Nazor“ for best book, as well as the City of Zagreb Award. She also published the novels „Devet života gospođe Adele“, „Četiri plamena, led“ and „Kutijica od školjki“, as well as the short story collection „Posljednje što su vidjele“.
